How to use these worksheets
Start with four rows of dotted letters and the guide lines switched on. Sit on the child's writing side so they can see the pencil, not your hand. Once they trace the dotted name confidently, print the same name with the guides off, then ask them to write it underneath from memory.
A thick triangular pencil or a chunky crayon works better than a standard pencil at this age. Grip comes before neatness, and neatness comes before speed.
Why the name comes first
A child's own name is usually the first word they learn to write, because it already carries meaning they own. Practising it builds the pencil control, letter formation and left to right tracking that every other word depends on. It is also the one piece of writing they will be asked for on their first day of school.
About the handwriting font
The letterforms come from the Edu family, real Australian school handwriting fonts published under an open licence. They use the single storey a and the straight l that early years classrooms teach, rather than the typographic shapes in most print fonts.
Questions
- What age is name tracing for?
- Most children are ready to trace their own name somewhere between three and five. Start with a short form of the name, four rows, and the guide lines switched on. Length matters more than age: a three letter name at four is easier than a nine letter name at five.
- Should I use capitals or a capital and lowercase?
- Type the name the way the child will write it at school, which is usually one capital followed by lowercase letters. Writing a whole name in capitals is easier at first but has to be unlearned later.
- How many rows should I print?
- Four is a good default. Two short sessions a week beat one long one, and a page that looks full can put a young child off before they start.
- Is the name I type stored anywhere?
- No. The worksheet is drawn in your browser and the name is never sent to us, never logged and never stored. Closing the tab erases it.
