What to watch for
Children who can count to five out loud often cannot yet write the shapes. Counting and writing are separate skills, and writing comes later.
Words to say while tracing
Saying a word that starts with the shape, while the pencil is moving, links the letter to a sound instead of leaving it an abstract squiggle. Try one, two and three.
